Sustainable Future

 

  Growing population and growth in economy led people to consume more than the past causing lots of problems like air pollution, climate change, and lack of resources. It has made imbalance between what nature replenishes and humans consume. One of the most critical factors that influence Earth is increase of carbon dioxide in the air which harms both planet and people. Individually, we can reduce the carbon emissions by using public transportation instead of using cars. Internationally, increasing certified forests which helps purify the air will help reduce CO2.

First, we can lower carbon emissions by using public transportation. Growth in economy allowed more people to have their own cars. Furthermore, some of the people or families own more than one car. Gas emissions from cars are the main culprit of air pollution. For this reason, use of cars should be reduced. Taking public transportations like buses and subways is one way. Since in our country, Korea, public transportation system is well organized, it is easy for people to use daily. Also, riding bicycles or walking to nearby destination is another way of not using cars. It not only helps to lower carbon emissions but also makes you healthier by exercising!

 

Increasing certified forests is another way to lower CO2 in the air. Trees provide oxygen and purify the air. However, people indiscriminately cutdown trees for their luxury goods, more than they need. For example, cutting down lots of trees in the rain forests is causing severe problems. Since it is commonly described as ‘lungs of the world’, it plays a big role in absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing clean oxygen into the air. Therefore, deforestation of this rain forest effects not only the people living in that area, but the whole world. So by certifying forests, logging will be regulated which will reduce the trees that are indiscriminately cutdown. It will help to reduce carbon emissions.

 

There are lots of ways to lower carbon in the air like not using cars much and increasing certified forests. However, even people know the ways to lower the carbon dioxide, they tend not to follow the solution. People should be more aware of the problems that are caused by CO2 before it gets worse. More people needs to understand the gravity of the situation that CO2 brings and make an effort to reduce carbon emissions.  

 

Explanatory Essay - Maze runner

 

 For some movies, the location is not so important that it could take place in any other city. However, there are movies with locations that are irreplaceable whether it's based on real or imaginary places. The location of the movie 'Maze Runner' is 'Maze' which is an imaginary, made up setting for the movie and it's important because it's irreplaceable. The location of the movie is essential because characters in the movie lives beside the maze and they try to escape from it together.

 

  One of the important factor in the movie is living within the maze where they have to figure out how to survive by cooperating each other. The characters live just beside the maze which opens in the morning and closes at night. They don't know why they are trapped in such place and work together to survive. The characters get food by growing fruits and crops and make rules to live in harmony. Also by working together, they get the map of the maze and try to find a way to get out of it. These kind of situations can't happen in any other locations which makes the maze an important element.

 

  Another important factor in the movie is escaping the maze. Since the characters now have the map, and they are eager to get out, some leading characters escape. There are monsters that appear at night and lots of unexpected obstacles they have to survive through. They fight over monsters and help each other to get through. However, some boys die in this process. These breathtaking events happening in maze makes many viewers to get immersed in the film which shows the importance of the setting.

 

  'Maze runner', as it is also mentioned in the title, most of the movie takes place in maze. It's the place where characters live and where all the process of escaping is done. These running through the maze and solving problems in this certain location makes the place important. Also, Maze is an unusual setting which makes the audience more interested in the story and this unexpected setting leads the viewers to more focus on the film.

Geotourism in Jeju Island

  Geotourism is a tourism that sustains or improves a travel destination and Jeju Island is one of the destinations that shows a good example of geotourism. Located in southern coast of Korea, Jeju Island is popular for its beautiful nature and local food to tourists. Jeju Island in fact, has an app for tourists providing information about Geo-trail, Geo-house, Geo-food, and Geo-activity which helps geotourism. The possible effects of geotourism in Jeju are allowing tourists to enjoy the nature and experience the different cultures of Jeju Island.
 

  One possible effect of geotourism in Jeju Island is the nature that tourists can enjoy. There are many places in Jeju that are famous for its beautiful nature. One example is Jeju Olle. It is the series of walking paths that stretch across the southern coast of the island, through forests, volcanic cones. Tourists can use bicycles or just walk along these paths admire the sight. Horse riding is another example that tourists can enjoy. Jeju has finely bred horses and island pony and tourists can experience horseback riding through local people's of horse ranches.

 

  Another possible effect of goetourism in Jeju Island is that tourists can experience the Jeju culture by having their local food and using guesthouse. Seafood is a major part of Jeju cuisine. The freshest, locally sourced seafood, caught by locals, provides fine dishes for tourists. Also, black pork barbecue is another popular food and it is famous for its chewier and delicious taste. For the guesthouses, it can be more friendly and open to tourists to experience the culture in Jeju. Tourists can easily meet local people and hear the stories or get the information of the Island. This can help tourists to better understand the Jeju Island.

 

  Jeju Island keeps growing as a popular tourist destination. Having tourists enjoy the nature and experience the cultures of Jeju with goetourism will effect tourists and both local people to benefits each other.

Living on an Urban Planet

     

 Number of people living in cities are exceeding every year and more than one-half of the people are living in cities now. It is seemed to increase rapidly as humans have become urban species.

 

 In 19th and early 20th century, urban areas had negative terms as grounds for disease and crime. However, urbanization is now considered as good news. Economist Edward Glaeser says cities are productive because people can exchange goods and ideas easily without taking long. Employees can share knowledge and this flow of ideas bring successful cities. Another environmentalist Stewart Brand says cities have less impact on the environment because dense cities produce less greenhouse gases per person. Urbanization is inevitable part of development and the problem is how to manage the growth properly.

 

 Seoul is a good example of urbanization. It began to invest the companies to make products to foreigners and this helped Samsung and Hyundai to develop. Lots of men and women worked in new factories and these allowed the city to absorb more people. Seoul's rapid urbanization brought successful growth in economy.

 

 Despite this success, how to manage urbanization, especially focusing on urban sprawl is the problem around the world. Urban planning professor Shlomo Angel sees two reasons for urban sprawl. Rising incomes and cheaper transportation. However she believes that good planning, such as reserving land and concentrations on human energy can make big difference in cities urbanization. These carefully planned cities would be a solution for poverty without harming the planet and will make successful cities.

 Hi, my name is Seoyoung Lee. I'm majoring in Clothing and double majoring in English Literature. I'm interested in global fashion marketing and merchandising. This is why I am double majoring in English and Clothing.

  I like traveling to different countries. I have been to several places during winter and summer vacations and these trips gave me valuable experiences. One of the most memorable place I traveled is Spain. I went there with my friend and that was the first time I planned everything by myself. Also, it was the first European country that I have visited which inspired me differently from other trips.

  When I have spare time, I like watching action movies, go shopping, and hang out with my friends. I also like reading fashion magazines and I'm planning to read one in English. I think reading books or magazines in English will help me develop my reading skills.

  Being able to read and write well in English will give me lots of advantages in my future career. So by taking this course, I would be able to improve my reading and writing skills.
